Poppy Cottage Gardens

We bought a Gardeners World Magazine earlier this year that had 2 for  tickets to lots of gardens. It saved us quite a bit at the Eden Project. During our second week I was looking for somewhere that my dad might like to wander round-  because he couldn't walk far. We saw this little garden was open a couple of afternoons a week and the address seemed quite close. The address was actually quite misleading- way the other side of Truro!

But it was a real find. It was such a peaceful, tranquil and beautiful place. The couple who owned the garden sit outside greeting the visitors and the husband bakes 3 giant cakes to sell with a cuppa! The wife does ALL the gardening herself. I was totally amazed- I can't keep ours weed free!

It was set out in lots of different little areas- called 'rooms'. Each section had a seating area and plenty of flowers to look at.
There was so much colour everywhere- so pretty.
It's nice to find somewhere that we can take Holly- and not rely on someone staying behind on dog sitting duties. TO be truthful Holly goes most places that we go- provided we've found places that we can take her! She even had a go in a rowing boat this year- and pulled to go back that way the next day. Nearly everyone came over to say Hello to her- it's amazing how many people have German Shepherds! One lady made us smile- as she could tell Holly was looking out for someone missing from her party. She said her dog would know how many people were with him- and he had to take that many home! They do like their little family herded together! They were bred as herding dogs- and it's definately evident in their character. Holly panics if she 'loses' Guy- she has to know where he is at all times. She goes to sit at the end of the garden when he is due home and then runs to get a toy as soon as he comes through the gate.

She also hates packing the car when leaving a holiday- she has to stay right by either the car or the cases and it makes her really unsettled. Taking on a rescue dog- you really don't know their history and it makes us really sad that she might have been dumped by someone. It's probably just as likely that she took off after a cat and forgot her way home. But she wasn't chipped or spayed when we got her- so although someone has at some point put a lot of hours into training her- they didn't look after her welfare so well!
My mum and dad at another one of the seating areas dotted about. This lady really has amazing vision- setting out the different areas of the garden so it feels like you are entering a new room!

Think this is a dahlia! Very beautiful!

I love these lilies- so pretty.
One of the statues dotted about. She had lots of different statues peeping out from the plants.
Time for afternoon tea! I had lemon cake that was absolutely delicious- and mum and dad had coffee and walnut cake. There was also a section with chickens, geese and ducks in- but I couldn't take Holly through there- she'd have thought it was an early dinner!

I'm so glad we saw the thread on UKS that mentioned the 2 for 1 offer on the gardens. This is the sort of place we'd never have found- as it's not on the major tourist trail. It is in the garden leaflets along with hundreds of others- but we would have taken a while to work through all of them!
