Lichfield - Walk 20

We decided to go for a walk around Lichfield for a couple of hours yesterday. I would have loved a lot longer there- but we had to drop Amy off at her grandparents- and I had to go hospital visiting.

Lichfield Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral with 3 spires in England. It is an amazing building. Apparently the weight of the ceiling made the side walls bulge- so 200-300 tons I presume was removed when it was remodeled. There was a service in progress when we went- so we couldn't walk around - and we also had Holly. But I would love to go back and wander round the cathedral and all the museums that we saw.

The last burning at the stake took place in the market square. Today there was a mini scooter rally there.

Dr Johnson's birthplace is in the square aswell- I loved the signa against the bright blue sky. We were expecting rain today- so the weather was a lovely surprise.

Holly did a bit of window shopping at the pet shop and then she went for a swim in the lake and we couldn't get her to come out! People were laughing and saying we'd have to walk around the other side of the lake to get her. If it had been the river Guy would have had to jump in to get her- so small mercies there!!!!!!!

She was back on her lead by the time we spotted these little ducklings. I've wanted a photo for weeks and we were so close today that we couldn't fail to get one!

The parents had 11 youngsters to look after and they must be doing a good job as they are all growing up nicely! It was lovely to watch.

Beacon Park dates from 1800 and is kept immaculately. They are doing a lot of rennovation work- so we didn't get to see it all. There was a statue of Edward VII and Captain Smith- captain of the Titanic. I've read on another post on Flikr that the reason he is in Lichfield is because his home town didn't want him. Such a shame. I admit that I don't know much about the cause of the Titanic sinking apart from the obvious iceberg and whether there is a back story to that- but it seems sad that he was 'homeless'. He was a seafaring man from the age of 13 and died on the Titanic.

Dr Milley's hospital dates back to 1400 ish - and was built to help 14 women. It has now been made into 1 bedroom flats and flatlets to help women of all ages on a low income. So it's nice that it's original purpose has been kept.
One the way out- we saw this strange building with 7 chimneys- and apparently this was set up to give men a bed for the night if they arrived too late to get into the city- so nice that they catered for both men and women!
