Walk 40- Calke Abbey

We walked around the grounds of Calke Abbey first- as the entrace to the house was by timed ticket and we had over 2 hours to wait. The flowers were so pretty- a lovely bit of autumn colour.

This apparently was from the reservoir when it flooded.

Scarecrow

Beautiful stag in the grounds by the car park.

The Entrance to Calke Abbey- originally the main entrance was to the first floor by stairs.

Cobwebby horseshoe above the greenhouse.

There were various apple activities going on in the walled garden part.

The Ice House was quite a walk from the house- and they used to collect ice from Dog Kennel Pond and store it to use in the main house to preserve fish and game. It was also used to chill desserts and champagne.

A pretty greenhouse

Colourful display of pumpkins- a real sign of autumn.

Part of the kitchen. Calke Abbey has been preserved in the state of deay that it was in when the National Trust took it over. They describe it as being between gentle neglect and downright dereliction. They had to make the structure of the house safe - but apart from a few rooms downstairs that they had already started the rest of the house is in a bit of a state!

One of the rooms that was restored.

An early shower. Electricity wasn't fitted to the house until 1963.

The original kitchen- a more modern kitchen was built elsewhere and this one was not in use.

Church in the grounds

A Severn Trent Nature reserve. Guy followed some cars out of the Estate- and we ended up here. It was well worth walking round.

The impressive view of Calke Abbey from the main gardens
