Walk 37- Worcester

Although I consider myself Birmingham born and bred- officially I was born in the County of Worcester. My parents house has a Birmingham postcode- but they pay council tax to Worcester.

We had a lovely day in Worcester- the weather forecast wasn't great. But the sun valiantly tried to beam down all day. It went cold about 2.30.
There were a lot of boats out enjoying the sunshine on Sunday- it was lovely to see.

THe River Severn
There was a plaque on the bridge saying that ancient legend with origins in the 12th C,  tells tales of an illicit love affair that ended tragically with the drowning of a young nymph- Sabrina (or Sabern). The river is said to be named after her.

The cathedral was absolutely stunning- and I'd love to go back for a proper look around the inside. We had to take it in turns with Holly.

Monument for the soldiers killed in the Boer War that were born in Worcester. I always think that the monuments for the Boer War are the most ornate- and I imagine it must have something to do with the economy following the World Wars.

St Andrews garden was created for the Queens Coronation. The church was demolished in 1949- leaving just the bell tower intact.

Elgar performed regularly in Worcester Cathedral apparently and there is an Elgar Route around the city.

I found this building fascinating and it apparently got it's name from a part of a local distillery at the rear of the building that 'rectified' spirits. THe inn was prone to flooding every year and the beer casks had to be brought up above flood level. Provisions would be taken by boat and delivered through the upstairs buildings.

Fab photos. I spent 3 years at university in Worcester from 86-89 and had my graduation ceremony in Worcester Cathedral. Not been back for many many years.
